Make time for downtime

 

If you’re the type of person that plans out their entire week in advance, make sure you’re scheduling downtime on your calendar. Whether it’s a few hours after work, or 30-minutes during lunch, schedule time for yourself when you have no obligations. This is different than just leaving space open on your calendar, because that space can be filled with obligations if you’re not careful.

 

Put post-work events in your schedule

 

Be it a workout class, a happy hour date with your significant other, or a movie that you want to catch before the crowds show up, try scheduling events around 5:30 or 6:00 during the week. That way, you’ll have a reason to leave work. A lot of people get stuck in the routine of staying late because there’s nothing pressing to get them to leave the office. You can avoid getting stuck in that routine by giving yourself after work obligations.

 

Have a seperate space for your work things

 

A lot of people bring their laptops home from work, which makes it difficult to stop working once you get home. Even having your laptop out on your coffee table can remind you that there’s more work to be done or more emails to respond to. If you want your work to be out of sight and out of mind, we recommend putting your work laptop in a cubby or inside a drawer when you get home. The more work you have to do to get your laptop out, the less likely you’ll be to give in to the temptation to keep working.
